365 project – Days 27 to 32

On the 27th I finally finished this tie I’d had in mind for far too long and I love it! It’s already available on my etsy here

On the 28th I opened the kitchen for the second time ever and first time on my own (5am starts! Ouch!) but as I was lighting the grill I noticed it looked kinda pretty. Obviously being at work I only had my phone on me, but the picture still came out pretty cool…or should I say hot 😉

On the 29th I was playing with this adorable fabric! I think I have to buy more soon!

On the 30th I dressed up all Chinese style for a photoshoot to celebrate the new year! Ok, so I didn’t actually take these photo’s but I did think of the concept, the styling, modelled and directed the shoot so I think it still counts. You can find the post I wrote here

I did actually take a photo myself on this day (sort of, it was after midnight but I was only just leaving work and hadn’t slept yet so I guess it counts). The weather was super foggy and looked awesome so I just couldn’t resist!

The 31st I had finished the adorable-fabric skirt and it really is cute! I took some bad phone photo’s as my camera’s battery had died and I’d lost the charger! Oops! Lots of photo editing later and you can find the skirt in my shop here

On the first (wow February already!) I had my last day of work for two weeks! Yey for being owed holiday! I also went and bought a new charger as I will be needing my Camera on Sunday! This charger not only charges my old styled DSLR battery (my camera is a very old model) but also AA, AAA (etc.), newer camera batteries, phones and has a car adapter! It’s going to be perfect for holidaying!

Today is Sunday and I’m afraid you’ll have to wait for the photo as I’m probably out and about taking it! I’m  adventuring to the centre of London for the Chinese New Year celebrations and hoping to get a few really good shots! I’ll definitely update with a blog post when i’m back and the photo’s are fully edited so keep your eyes peeled!

What have you been celebrating this week?

365 Project – Days 21 – 27

Jan the 20th saw me excited over my work week. No closes? No finishing work at 1 or 2am? Actually on morning shifts for once? Definitely something I am rarely treated too.

On the 21st i must have moisturised my hands constantly. My mum bought me this hand cream from Avon as my job was making my hands very sore. It works wonders! I accidentally made the photo purple, I guess that will teach me from looking at the filters in bad lighting. oops!

On the 22nd we finally got news back from our old tenancy! We had to take legal action as our landlord was demanding to take more money off us than our deposit, but he was a big, fat liar and we got all our money back! It’s a shame it’s all gone on rent we owe for the current place and so we’re still as poor as ever, but such a relief to finally have it sorted! Plus it was right before staff party which meant I could enjoy myself without worrying too much.

On the 23rd Ash and I went to a little cafe for breakfast burgers to recover from the night before. They were delicious and our drinks even came with cute heart and triangle ice cubes! It was nice to get out of the house together on a (sort of) date as it’s something we haven’t done for ages due to lack of time and money. We’re hoping to start where we left off from with our Alphabet dating series soon. I can’t wait!

On the 24th I FINALLY finished a project! I’d planned out this tie for a while and now it’s done. It should be up in my shop shortly. Still many more half done, or not even started, projects to go though…

Yesterday I had a catch up with my sister over a cuppa tea and murder she wrote! We then went to IKEA to get her some items and I somehow came back with a car full! Oops!

Today was my first official ‘Crafternoon Tea’ with a good friend. She brought some tiny sandwiches, scones and cheese and biscuits. I made some soup. Then we crafted all afternoon with a cup of tea in hand! She made a big cushion cover and I made good progress on a dress I started in the summer!

20140126_163911

Sorry they are all phone pictures this week. It’s been a bit hectic socially. Next week i will definitely try to take more with my big camera. (one week i might actually stick to it!)

Until then stick around for more sewing, products and some hopefully awesome photography.

An Unconventional Valentines – Etsy Treasury

I haven’t done one of these in AGES and I felt it was finally time to get back in the habit of making treasuries. It’s really enjoyable and gives a chance to look at all the weird and wonderful things Etsy sellers have to offer!

I decided to go for a valentines theme, as it is nearly that time of year again, but wanted to give it an unusual twist. Here are a collection of items that are either unusual in themselves or not very conventionally valentines. For all the items you can find them on Etsy by just clicking the image!

Hope you enjoy!

1) Heart Little Breath Pair

I don’t think I need to explain why these are included, they are very unsual. They remind me of something you might find in a Studio Ghibli film, maybe that’s why I like them. They certainly have a charm to them and would be a cute edition to a bookcase or sideboard.

2) Watercolour Love Red Umbrella

This one is included as I feel it has a very sombre feel to it, something not usually associated with valentines day. However I do think that this is a very beautiful print, I especially love the streams of red coming off the umbrella, gives a good sense of the downpour this couple could be caught in.

3) The Heart

This simple, but expressive piece would make a great statement piece in your home, or even a great card (if the seller were to sell cards).  I love the messy approach and think this is a very cool piece.

4) Circuit Board Cufflinks

These cool cufflinks would be great for any computer geek (just like my boyfriend!) or even just someone who likes gadgets (so most guys then). The whole shop is full of these awesome geeky items and is a personal favourite of mine.

5) Personalised Champers Kit

Drinking champagne might be something done quite often on Valentines day, but making your own isn’t! In all honesty i’d probably enjoy the making more than the drinking! It would definitely be a cute thing to do with your loved one, and even if it isn’t ready for the day itself it would give you a good excuse to have another romantic night in.

6) Anatomical Heart in a Jar

This hand blown glass item is the perfect gift for someone who hates the unrealistic heart usually associated with love and valentines. Not only does the bottle look gorgeous but the heart is captivatingly intricate. Definitely a cool piece to display in your home.

7) Valentines Bear

Teddy bears are a very common valentines day gift but they usually hold roses and hearts and other things that make me want to vomit (i’m not the most girly of girls when it comes to these things). This bear is a whole lot cooler, and cuter! Plus it could be the perfect gift for both men and women!

8) Love Letter Cookies

Love letters are very popular for all those lovey-dovey couples out there, but if you want something a little bit different why not make those letters edible! We all know girls love sweet things, and what better than to cover those sweet things with a poem that will probably make her cry! You’d be the best boyfriend ever, until they’re all eaten up at least.

9) ClockWork Heart Tie

This unusual tie is pretty cool and would be a great gift for the man in your life, especially if he likes unusual ties.

10) Little Sculpture holding Heart

This cute sculpture is part of a ‘star series’. These cute and quirky items are really fun to look at and would make a great, inexpensive gift for someone special.

11) Valentines Bike

I found some similar bike sculptures (although not heart themed and probably not by the same person) when I went to amsterdam and bought one each for my mum and her boyfriend. They are super cool and a great gift for any bike maniac.

12) Egg Valentines Card

Bored of the standard valentines greetings card? Well this shop makes ‘cards’ out of real chicken eggs! Your personalised message is put inside your chosen egg and you have to crack the egg open to read it which almost seems a shame as they’re so cute!

13) Longitude and Latitude bracelet

I love the rustic look of this bracelet and it can be personalised to have your own co-ordinates on! Maybe you could have it set to the place you both first met, your home, where you were proposed to, anywhere of real significance to the relationship.

14) Wooden Card

Another unusual card option. These look beautifully made and can double up as the actual gift as they can be kept on display with the mini easel the shop also sells. Just lovely!

15) Heart Shaped Chalkboard Stickers

Ok, bit of a strange choice I know, but i think these stickers could be really cute for creating your own valentines gift. Stick them on jars and fill with love heart sweets, or make a valentines day picnic labelled with them, there are so many possibilities! I think they would be great for a personal touch to your gift and look pretty cool, plus you can always wipe off your message and use them again.

16) Heart Nose Ring

Nothing says ‘Valentines Day’ quite like jewellery, but lets start steering away from the expensive diamond rings, they are far too special for a day where you’re practically forced to be romantic. Instead get something cute like this adorable little nose stud, i kinda wish I had my nose pierced just so I could buy this.

What unconventional things are you planning for this valentines? Or what sort of unusual things have you done in the past? I’d love to hear your stories!

365 Project : Days 1- 5

I’ve decided that I really want to do a 365 project to document this year and hopefully improve my photography. I will try to take as many with my ‘big’ camera as possible but I’m sure there will be phone/instagram pictures included as well.  I am combining this with 100 days of happiness too and looking for the things which make me happy in day to day life so as not to take it for granted. Follow me on instagram (username : Fwaire) for all the 100 days of happiness photos!

I was going to start on Jan 1st to keep things simple, but I seem to have gotten a little too excited and started on the Eve instead, I guess that could make for a good, bold ending though. 🙂

I’ve decided I’m going to blog my photo’s every sunday rather than everyday as I think it will be easier to keep up with, so, without further ado, here’s week 1 : Days 1-6!

Screen shot 2014-01-03 at 10.15.48

Happy New Year! Myself and Ash on December 31st (somewhere around midnight), celebrating in our house with a few friends.

Screen shot 2014-01-03 at 10.15.41

Jan 1st – I wasn’t particularly hungry whilst at work but couldn’t resist a pudding on my break! Mmm Apple crumble and custard! 🙂

Jan 2nd – Making ties! I’ve had two sales already (one on christmas day and the other on the 1st of jan). Such an amazing start to the year!

Jan 3rd – A sudden thunder storm made me dash for my camera in the hopes of photographing lightening! Unfortunately the bolt that sent me running for my camera turned out to be the only one, but I do rather like this image I captured of the rain on our slanted attic windows. It can sometimes be loud, but I actually find the sound quite soothing.

light

Jan 4th – Our light switch has broken in our bathroom but luckily our flat comes with awesome stained glass windows in almost every door. The unusual lighting situation has really made me appreciate some of this house’s beauty. This is our current, romantic, view from the toilet, along with Ash wondering why there’s camera sounds coming from the bathroom…

Jan 5th – This was a movie day, until i was called into work (it was meant to be my day off!). I watched a few disney classics whilst sewing and then settled down with some David Attenborough after work whilst writing this blog. Lovely! I find streaming programs on my laptop whilst sewing helps me to work better as I then can’t use it to explore the internet!

So that was the first (almost) week of my 365 project! It’s a shame I only managed to get my DSLR for two of the shots, but hopefully I can use it more next week. 🙂

Who else is doing a 365, 100 days of happiness  or similar project?

Screenprinting – Yey or Nay?

I’ve been looking into possibly expanding to screenprinting.

I really want to look into it as I have a few designs that would take too long appliqueing to be viable, however I know the materials can be a little costly. I’d also prefer to make my minecraft ties printed rather than appliqued because, again, i’m losing money (and after all this is trying to be a business) taking the time to sew everything on. I will probably still do the odd applique work, but I really feel this would be the next step in my business for the plans I have in my head.

I found some good looking starter kits for around £70-100 and am tempted to spend some of my christmas money on them but don’t want to invest too much into something that would end up being a failure as I really can’t afford that at the moment.

Do any crafters out there know much about screen printing, more specifically if it is worth while?

Giveaway help!

I’m going to be running a competition in the next week but am having trouble deciding on the prize to give away.

The choices are a funky Tie or a cute Tote Bag but I can’t decide which!

Maybe I should give the winner a choice of either one? (I will be making both eventually anyway)

Please help me decide which by either commenting on here or choosing an answer on this poll on my facebook!

And of course don’t forget to follow my facebook, twitter and blog for the actual competition 😉

Thank you!

‘Till next time!

Liebster Award

So I’ve been nominated for the Liebster Award (ok so it was quite a while ago but I’ve only just decided to actually post about it) by CherryBlossomTears.

I wont lie, I usually don’t like these kinda things, they just remind me of the silly facebook things of ‘like if you agree if cancer is bad’ kinda spam posts. (I mean really, who doesn’t think cancer is bad? It’s just rediculous)

Obviously I know this isn’t exactly the same as that, definitely not as stupid, and when thinking about it I decided this is actually a good way to share facts about yourself for others and to maybe learn a little bit about the blogs your following. So here I am, answering my 5 questions and trying to think up some random questions to ask other blogs!

The Five Questions for Me

1.Where do you find inspiration?

In a variety of places. Sometimes I look at a fabric or bead and think ‘Oh, that would look amazing like this!’. I also love looking at nature and the shapes and feelings it creates (this is a theme I will be working on more in the future once my seamstress skills have improved, I already have designs drawn up!). The final inspiration, I guess, is my boyfriend. I can’t not include him as he was the inspiration behind my best selling item, the Minecraft Creeper tie!

2.How do you beat the blues?

Usually by either keeping myself busy or sitting down with some green tea and a big bar of chocolate! My boyfriend is also great at cheering me up with cuddles and spoiling me with treats.

3.If you could be a magical creature for a day, what would it be and why?

I’m tempted to say Unicorn just because they’re so pretty and prancy! But lets face it, being a dragon would be freakin’ amazing! I’d get to fly around shooting fire out of my nostrils all day!

4.What would be your ideal holiday?

Holidays where I get to explore, go on hikes, meet the people, find little unknown spots. I’ve been on several holidays with Explore and have absolutely loved them! I think the next big place I want to go is Africa, on Safari. Ash is originally from South Africa and still has family there he hasn’t seen in over 10 years and so we were thinking of starting to save up for a trip so we can visit them (although we need to be earning more money first!).

5.What does creativity mean to you?

Creativity is exploring your mind and letting it come up with something that is truly your own. I believe it can be found in all aspects of life and in everyone, it just manifests itself in different ways and isn’t always noticed.

So the five blogs I’m going to nominate are:

CassieFairy

Pillows-a-la-Mode

Arabella

KatyJadeDobsonArt

Green Rabbit Designs

My Questions for You

1) What is the first thing you do in the Morning?

2) If there’s one craft you would like to try, what would it be?

3) What did you want to be when you were younger?

4) What do you tend to procrastinate over?

5) Where is one place you would like to visit?

For those with blogs chosen for the award– copy and paste the award in your blog. Tell who nominated you with a link to my blog. Share five random things about yourself and then answer my questions. When that is all done, nominate five bloggers that you follow and send them the rules, creating five new questions for them to answer along with their random things. 🙂

Breaded Fish – Cooking Tutorial

Recently I’ve found that, although I love cooking, I’ve been a bit lazy with my meals lately. I never seem to make anything interesting any more, It’s just pie and chips or sausage and mash. I seem to have lost my enthusiasm for it. So I figure what better way to get it back then to blog about it! I was thinking this could be a weekly or maybe fortnightly section of my blog and will hopefully inspire many of you to cook as well!

I have actually been thinking about doing this for a while but wasn’t sure about the idea. I mentioned this on Pillowsalamode’s blog and she gave me the final push I needed to get round and do it! You can find her awesome blog here . She really makes some adorable sewn products.

Anyways. Before I start with my first ever cooking blog, there are probably a few things you need to know about my style of cooking:

1) I am very slapdash. My recipes are always changing and most of them made up as I go (although usually based off some prior knowledge) .

2) I like simple easy recipes. I know I can cook more complicated things, but what’s the point when quick and easy can taste so nice?

3)  I don’t really measure or time things. When it looks right that’ll do. If you’re looking for precise recipes this is not the place.

Got all that? Still want to read on? Great stuff.

Today I am making some lovely breaded fish. I’ve never actually made this before nor do I know how to, but I do know it involves eggs and breadcrumbs. I’ve battered fish at work and figure it can’t be much different to that right?

First off is to make the breadcrumbs. This is easy. All you need is a ‘Wizzer stick’ (as I like to call it) or a blender, and obviously some bread. I got my ‘Whizzer Stick’  for a christmas present years ago and absolutely love it! It’s so useful with all it’s different attachments and so much easier to store than a blender. I definitely think every kitchen should have one.

I just used 1 slice of bread and whizzed it up until there were no big pieces. Easy.

Next You need to pour the bread crumbs into a longish container which will fit in your fish, mine was a little too small but still worked fine enough.

You also need to crack some eggs into another dish and whisk them up just a little bit so they’re nicely mixed together.

Whisking eggs in the Batman Apron I made for my boyfriend

Now comes the messy bit. Dip your fish firstly in the egg and then in the breadcrumbs and repeat. I found  I had to do this double dip to make a really good even coating of breadcrumbs on the fish (see learning as I go!). I used a nice fillet of Cod given to me by work as it was past the date we could sell but still edible. I think for this recipe it is probably best to use a thicker fillet as it would be harder to over cook, but thin ones like this should be fine as long as you are careful.

Lovely juicy cod!

Meet bob. He’s helping me fish the cod out of the egg sea.

And now helping to apply the breadcrumb coating

Then I put them on a baking tray along with some wedges I’d made up and put them in the oven. I put the oven on around 180-200˚c for around 20 mins (as I said i’m not very precise). Or at least that’s what I intended. I actually ended up forgetting about food as I got distracted with some others things and slightly over cooked it all (looked nice but the fish became a little dry, like I said you need to be more careful with the thinner fillets and I was not). But basically just throw it in there until everything looks brown, golden and delicious!

And there you have it. It’s tasty, quick and easy and so much cheaper than the shop bought breaded fish. We ate it with homemade wedges, peas, sweetcorn and salad cream.

I have actually already started thinking about how to improve this recipe.

1) Obviously don’t be an idiot and forget about it cooking.

2) Add some herbs and spices to the eggs or breadcrumbs for a little extra flavour.

If anyone decides to have a go at this recipe or even has some more ideas for improvements i’d love to see your results and suggestions!

I really hope you enjoyed reading tis tutorial because I really enjoyed cooking, eating and writing it 😉

Next time I will have more of my sewing updates as I have a project almost finished! (sneak preview below!)

Till next time!

Any guesses which game this is from?

Wonky Festive Tie

I’ve been making this tie for a while now, I started it before I went to the wedding in lincoln but have been so busy with work, or just been too tired, that I haven’t managed to finish it.

Finally I’ve had time to get round to finishing it and, quite honestly, i’m disappointed.

As you can tell from these photographs, the thick end is a little…wonky. I promise that it doesn’t look nearly as bad when actually worn but it’s still enough to annoy me and to make me wonder if I can really put it up for sale.

Obviously I don’t want to get bad reviews by selling a bad product so I was thinking of maybe selling it at a reduced price and mentioning it in the listing, but then would it really sell?

I  am tempted just to hide it away at the bottom of my material box, but then it seems like such a shame and a waste of time and effort making it. Plus I don’t really have money to be wasting material, as it is i wont be even buying more material when i run out (luckily I have a lot of stock for the moment).

I guess all crafters must have something they’ve made that they aren’t completely happy with, especially in the learning stages.

So what would you do/have you done in this situation?

For now though it’s on to the next project I guess…

Getting Ready for the Festive Season.

I’ve finally added a new Item to my shop!

I know I said in my last post that I was working on an apron but I found out that I don’t have the right coloured thread for the top stitching so I decided to make something else instead.

Proof i did start the apron…

I was looking through all my materials and found some with a Christmas theme left over from gifts i’d made the family last christmas. Etsy has just had a big push on ‘Christmas in July’ and there was lots of advice telling shop owners to get festive items in their shops nice and early, so I figured I may as well get some in my own shop in preparation.

As there wasn’t a lot of material left I decided to make a tie. I made ties for all the men in my family last christmas and they seemed to be a big hit! My grandpa actually got the tie made from the same material as this one and seemed so proud to have it! It made me really happy to see him so excited to wear something i’d made!

I really like this material, it’s festive but sophisticated at the same time. I think it makes a tie that’s perfect for adding a bit of fun, festive cheer and can be worn to any kind of event, whether serious or more relaxed.

I also incorporated the penguin I spoke about in my last post. I’ve sewn it onto the back of the large end and think it works really well!

I’m very proud of this Item and think it is the best tie i’ve made so far (quite likely with the help of my new snazzy machine!) . It’s now for sale in my shop right here. So if you’re wanting to do a bit of early christmas shopping please stop by!

I’m sure i’ll be making more festive Items in the future, the only problem is i’m not sure what kind of items to make, other than Ties and Aprons. I had also thought of making a stocking or two, or some kind of festive gift bag. What do you think I should make with my material? What would you want to buy this Christmas? Please leave suggestions in the comments below or fill in the poll on my facebook page  🙂 It would be very useful.
