On the 27th I finally finished this tie I’d had in mind for far too long and I love it! It’s already available on my etsy here
On the 28th I opened the kitchen for the second time ever and first time on my own (5am starts! Ouch!) but as I was lighting the grill I noticed it looked kinda pretty. Obviously being at work I only had my phone on me, but the picture still came out pretty cool…or should I say hot 😉
On the 29th I was playing with this adorable fabric! I think I have to buy more soon!
On the 30th I dressed up all Chinese style for a photoshoot to celebrate the new year! Ok, so I didn’t actually take these photo’s but I did think of the concept, the styling, modelled and directed the shoot so I think it still counts. You can find the post I wrote here
I did actually take a photo myself on this day (sort of, it was after midnight but I was only just leaving work and hadn’t slept yet so I guess it counts). The weather was super foggy and looked awesome so I just couldn’t resist!
The 31st I had finished the adorable-fabric skirt and it really is cute! I took some bad phone photo’s as my camera’s battery had died and I’d lost the charger! Oops! Lots of photo editing later and you can find the skirt in my shop here
On the first (wow February already!) I had my last day of work for two weeks! Yey for being owed holiday! I also went and bought a new charger as I will be needing my Camera on Sunday! This charger not only charges my old styled DSLR battery (my camera is a very old model) but also AA, AAA (etc.), newer camera batteries, phones and has a car adapter! It’s going to be perfect for holidaying!
Today is Sunday and I’m afraid you’ll have to wait for the photo as I’m probably out and about taking it! I’m adventuring to the centre of London for the Chinese New Year celebrations and hoping to get a few really good shots! I’ll definitely update with a blog post when i’m back and the photo’s are fully edited so keep your eyes peeled!
What have you been celebrating this week?
Jan the 20th saw me excited over my work week. No closes? No finishing work at 1 or 2am? Actually on morning shifts for once? Definitely something I am rarely treated too.
On the 21st i must have moisturised my hands constantly. My mum bought me this hand cream from Avon as my job was making my hands very sore. It works wonders! I accidentally made the photo purple, I guess that will teach me from looking at the filters in bad lighting. oops!
On the 22nd we finally got news back from our old tenancy! We had to take legal action as our landlord was demanding to take more money off us than our deposit, but he was a big, fat liar and we got all our money back! It’s a shame it’s all gone on rent we owe for the current place and so we’re still as poor as ever, but such a relief to finally have it sorted! Plus it was right before staff party which meant I could enjoy myself without worrying too much.
On the 23rd Ash and I went to a little cafe for breakfast burgers to recover from the night before. They were delicious and our drinks even came with cute heart and triangle ice cubes! It was nice to get out of the house together on a (sort of) date as it’s something we haven’t done for ages due to lack of time and money. We’re hoping to start where we left off from with our Alphabet dating series soon. I can’t wait!
On the 24th I FINALLY finished a project! I’d planned out this tie for a while and now it’s done. It should be up in my shop shortly. Still many more half done, or not even started, projects to go though…
Yesterday I had a catch up with my sister over a cuppa tea and murder she wrote! We then went to IKEA to get her some items and I somehow came back with a car full! Oops!
Today was my first official ‘Crafternoon Tea’ with a good friend. She brought some tiny sandwiches, scones and cheese and biscuits. I made some soup. Then we crafted all afternoon with a cup of tea in hand! She made a big cushion cover and I made good progress on a dress I started in the summer!
Sorry they are all phone pictures this week. It’s been a bit hectic socially. Next week i will definitely try to take more with my big camera. (one week i might actually stick to it!)
Until then stick around for more sewing, products and some hopefully awesome photography.
I’ve decided that I really want to do a 365 project to document this year and hopefully improve my photography. I will try to take as many with my ‘big’ camera as possible but I’m sure there will be phone/instagram pictures included as well. I am combining this with 100 days of happiness too and looking for the things which make me happy in day to day life so as not to take it for granted. Follow me on instagram (username : Fwaire) for all the 100 days of happiness photos!
I was going to start on Jan 1st to keep things simple, but I seem to have gotten a little too excited and started on the Eve instead, I guess that could make for a good, bold ending though. 🙂
I’ve decided I’m going to blog my photo’s every sunday rather than everyday as I think it will be easier to keep up with, so, without further ado, here’s week 1 : Days 1-6!
Happy New Year! Myself and Ash on December 31st (somewhere around midnight), celebrating in our house with a few friends.
Jan 1st – I wasn’t particularly hungry whilst at work but couldn’t resist a pudding on my break! Mmm Apple crumble and custard! 🙂
Jan 2nd – Making ties! I’ve had two sales already (one on christmas day and the other on the 1st of jan). Such an amazing start to the year!
Jan 3rd – A sudden thunder storm made me dash for my camera in the hopes of photographing lightening! Unfortunately the bolt that sent me running for my camera turned out to be the only one, but I do rather like this image I captured of the rain on our slanted attic windows. It can sometimes be loud, but I actually find the sound quite soothing.
Jan 4th – Our light switch has broken in our bathroom but luckily our flat comes with awesome stained glass windows in almost every door. The unusual lighting situation has really made me appreciate some of this house’s beauty. This is our current, romantic, view from the toilet, along with Ash wondering why there’s camera sounds coming from the bathroom…
Jan 5th – This was a movie day, until i was called into work (it was meant to be my day off!). I watched a few disney classics whilst sewing and then settled down with some David Attenborough after work whilst writing this blog. Lovely! I find streaming programs on my laptop whilst sewing helps me to work better as I then can’t use it to explore the internet!
So that was the first (almost) week of my 365 project! It’s a shame I only managed to get my DSLR for two of the shots, but hopefully I can use it more next week. 🙂
Who else is doing a 365, 100 days of happiness or similar project?
I’ve been looking into possibly expanding to screenprinting.
I really want to look into it as I have a few designs that would take too long appliqueing to be viable, however I know the materials can be a little costly. I’d also prefer to make my minecraft ties printed rather than appliqued because, again, i’m losing money (and after all this is trying to be a business) taking the time to sew everything on. I will probably still do the odd applique work, but I really feel this would be the next step in my business for the plans I have in my head.
I found some good looking starter kits for around £70-100 and am tempted to spend some of my christmas money on them but don’t want to invest too much into something that would end up being a failure as I really can’t afford that at the moment.
Do any crafters out there know much about screen printing, more specifically if it is worth while?
I’m going to be running a competition in the next week but am having trouble deciding on the prize to give away.
The choices are a funky Tie or a cute Tote Bag but I can’t decide which!
Maybe I should give the winner a choice of either one? (I will be making both eventually anyway)
Please help me decide which by either commenting on here or choosing an answer on this poll on my facebook!
And of course don’t forget to follow my facebook, twitter and blog for the actual competition 😉
‘Till next time!
So I’ve been nominated for the Liebster Award (ok so it was quite a while ago but I’ve only just decided to actually post about it) by CherryBlossomTears.
I wont lie, I usually don’t like these kinda things, they just remind me of the silly facebook things of ‘like if you agree if cancer is bad’ kinda spam posts. (I mean really, who doesn’t think cancer is bad? It’s just rediculous)
Obviously I know this isn’t exactly the same as that, definitely not as stupid, and when thinking about it I decided this is actually a good way to share facts about yourself for others and to maybe learn a little bit about the blogs your following. So here I am, answering my 5 questions and trying to think up some random questions to ask other blogs!
The Five Questions for Me
1.Where do you find inspiration?
In a variety of places. Sometimes I look at a fabric or bead and think ‘Oh, that would look amazing like this!’. I also love looking at nature and the shapes and feelings it creates (this is a theme I will be working on more in the future once my seamstress skills have improved, I already have designs drawn up!). The final inspiration, I guess, is my boyfriend. I can’t not include him as he was the inspiration behind my best selling item, the Minecraft Creeper tie!
2.How do you beat the blues?
Usually by either keeping myself busy or sitting down with some green tea and a big bar of chocolate! My boyfriend is also great at cheering me up with cuddles and spoiling me with treats.
3.If you could be a magical creature for a day, what would it be and why?
I’m tempted to say Unicorn just because they’re so pretty and prancy! But lets face it, being a dragon would be freakin’ amazing! I’d get to fly around shooting fire out of my nostrils all day!
4.What would be your ideal holiday?
Holidays where I get to explore, go on hikes, meet the people, find little unknown spots. I’ve been on several holidays with Explore and have absolutely loved them! I think the next big place I want to go is Africa, on Safari. Ash is originally from South Africa and still has family there he hasn’t seen in over 10 years and so we were thinking of starting to save up for a trip so we can visit them (although we need to be earning more money first!).
5.What does creativity mean to you?
Creativity is exploring your mind and letting it come up with something that is truly your own. I believe it can be found in all aspects of life and in everyone, it just manifests itself in different ways and isn’t always noticed.
So the five blogs I’m going to nominate are:
My Questions for You
1) What is the first thing you do in the Morning?
2) If there’s one craft you would like to try, what would it be?
3) What did you want to be when you were younger?
4) What do you tend to procrastinate over?
5) Where is one place you would like to visit?
For those with blogs chosen for the award– copy and paste the award in your blog. Tell who nominated you with a link to my blog. Share five random things about yourself and then answer my questions. When that is all done, nominate five bloggers that you follow and send them the rules, creating five new questions for them to answer along with their random things. 🙂
I’ve been making this tie for a while now, I started it before I went to the wedding in lincoln but have been so busy with work, or just been too tired, that I haven’t managed to finish it.
Finally I’ve had time to get round to finishing it and, quite honestly, i’m disappointed.
As you can tell from these photographs, the thick end is a little…wonky. I promise that it doesn’t look nearly as bad when actually worn but it’s still enough to annoy me and to make me wonder if I can really put it up for sale.
Obviously I don’t want to get bad reviews by selling a bad product so I was thinking of maybe selling it at a reduced price and mentioning it in the listing, but then would it really sell?
I am tempted just to hide it away at the bottom of my material box, but then it seems like such a shame and a waste of time and effort making it. Plus I don’t really have money to be wasting material, as it is i wont be even buying more material when i run out (luckily I have a lot of stock for the moment).
I guess all crafters must have something they’ve made that they aren’t completely happy with, especially in the learning stages.
So what would you do/have you done in this situation?
For now though it’s on to the next project I guess…
I’ve finally added a new Item to my shop!
I know I said in my last post that I was working on an apron but I found out that I don’t have the right coloured thread for the top stitching so I decided to make something else instead.
I was looking through all my materials and found some with a Christmas theme left over from gifts i’d made the family last christmas. Etsy has just had a big push on ‘Christmas in July’ and there was lots of advice telling shop owners to get festive items in their shops nice and early, so I figured I may as well get some in my own shop in preparation.
As there wasn’t a lot of material left I decided to make a tie. I made ties for all the men in my family last christmas and they seemed to be a big hit! My grandpa actually got the tie made from the same material as this one and seemed so proud to have it! It made me really happy to see him so excited to wear something i’d made!
I really like this material, it’s festive but sophisticated at the same time. I think it makes a tie that’s perfect for adding a bit of fun, festive cheer and can be worn to any kind of event, whether serious or more relaxed.
I also incorporated the penguin I spoke about in my last post. I’ve sewn it onto the back of the large end and think it works really well!
I’m very proud of this Item and think it is the best tie i’ve made so far (quite likely with the help of my new snazzy machine!) . It’s now for sale in my shop right here. So if you’re wanting to do a bit of early christmas shopping please stop by!
I’m sure i’ll be making more festive Items in the future, the only problem is i’m not sure what kind of items to make, other than Ties and Aprons. I had also thought of making a stocking or two, or some kind of festive gift bag. What do you think I should make with my material? What would you want to buy this Christmas? Please leave suggestions in the comments below or fill in the poll on my facebook page 🙂 It would be very useful.
Yes, as the title suggests, I pretty much spent valentines alone, despite actually having a boyfriend. But we’ll get into that later…
I had an exciting day on Sunday as I got up early to go to london to try and become an extra in the film adaption of Les Miserables. A ridiculous number of people turned up (like 7000?) and there were only 300 roles that needed filling (ha! only!). A lot of people didn’t even get through the doors, luckily I somehow managed to.
Once i was in we were asked to fill in a form, then got measurements taken and a photograph. Apparently I should find out before the end of the month so fingers crossed!
After coming home from the auditions the boyfriend and I decided to go on a little date. Since he saw the adverts for Star Wars in 3D he’s been wanting to go and see it so that seemed like the obvious choice.
We’d both already seen the movie so knew the story line and what to expect, but the 3D definitely enhanced the experience. The pod racing, the flight in space, the fight scenes. Everything just seemed so much bigger and more exciting, although I guess the big screen could have contributed to that as well. In fact i don’t even think he wanted to see it for the 3D, he just wanted to see Star Wars in the cinema.
Monday passed with no big events and was rather boring, but as we all know, today (or yesterday as it is past midnight, whoops!) is valentines.
I’ve spent pretty much the whole of valentines on my own. Woke up at 8 to the boyfriends alarm, played Skyrim until 12 (It was a lazy day ok) then wandered into town on the search for fabric to make his valentines present. However, I couldn’t really find any nice fabrics and instead bought a t-shirt with a lion on it (something i’ve always wanted, it was love at first sight).
Eventually, with the help of my amazing smart phone (seriously how did I ever cope without?), I found that there was a big fabric store about a 5 minute drive away!
I only went in for one bit of fabric but ended up coming back with 3…Something that seems to happen everytime I buy fabric. I seriously need someone to come with me to fabric stores and stop me spending too much.
I bought some polkadot to go with another polkadot for an apron I have in mind, so I guess that’s acceptable.
I also got this amazing, wipeable material, almost like linoleum. It has big crayons on it and i think will make the perfect craft apron for a child. I’m so excited to use it, i just hope that it doesn’t break my needle. So i’ve decided I can get away with that purchase too.
The last fabric was a stripey brown, grey, white and black that was actually what i’d gone there for, so obviously that was acceptable too. This was to make a nice tie for my boyfriend as he’s been asking me for one for ages and what a perfect time to give him one! (plus I have loads left to make more ties as the material turned out really nice)
I’m just waiting for him to come back from work now to give it to him, i think he thinks i haven’t got him anything so it will be a nice surprise.
I would love to hear about what kind of things anyone else made (or bought) for their valentines.
Till next time, Stay happy!
Ok, so it’s quite late but i have been rather busy.
Just before christmas I decided to buy all this christmassy fabric in the hopes of making my family some gifts.
Cue me being really unorganised and failing to get anything done.
This lead to me working like a crazy woman, my boyfriend even started calling me his ‘little chinese worker’, to get them finished on time.
I had made a couple of Aprons before, but this time I decided to go all out, giving them all a nice lining (even in the pockets). The ties also have a nice lining on them (unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of the finished products before everyone left)
Christmas itself was probably one of my favourite christmases we’ve had, even my mum has been saying the same.
My boyfriend, Ash, had decided to spend it with us instead of his own family (long story) so I was especially happy.
We started the day as normal, opening stocking presents (I’d bought some for Ash so that he didn’t feel left out). I got a cookbook, lots of chocolate, some amazingly pretty beads (i’m just itching to use) along with the usual socks and knickers.
We then took our usual trip to see some extended family members, had a few glasses of alcohol, exchanged a few gifts, before coming back to sort out food and such. I also then disappeared upstairs to carry on making some bags for my aunts to put their presents in (a selection of mustard and soaps). Yes I was so badly organised I was even working on christmas day itself.
Eventually the whole family arrived. Aunts, Uncle, Cousins, Grandparents all descended on us. There were 14 of us in total (3 being littles) and so it was very busy. We had to drag the kitchen table into our living room (good job it’s a big room!) and get all the emergency chairs out, including piano stools.
My grandpa waved his new tie happily when he arrived exclaiming how he was sorry he was no longer wearing it, he was just too warm. Made me very happy to see how much everyone was enjoying the things i’d made for them.
We thought it was going to be far to hectic and noisy for the grandparents, and there would be too many people all getting in the way, but thankfully my xbox kept the children amused upstairs whilst the food was being prepared and everything seemed to run smoothly!
I got some brilliant presents, David Attenborough’s Autobiography (i’ve always been obsessed), A years subscription to a jewellery magazine, a new suitcase (the wheels on mine look like they’ve exploded), clothing and books.
All together, a very successful christmas.
Ash text me the other day saying how his work mates picked on his tie (to be fair it is bright red with reindeers on it…) and then when he mentioned i’d made it they were all shocked and refused to believe him until they saw it didn’t have any tags. (That reminds me…I must get some tags made.) Again it made me so happy to hear how impressed people were with my work! Definitely going to keep this sewing malarky up. Hopefully I will be moving onto clothing soon…or at least some more complicated aprons and lots more ties.
In other news. I will be changing the name of my business. Claire’s Crafty Creations is just too boring and over done. My mum doesn’t agree, but then I doubt she hasn’t searched it in google. Far too many shops pop up. I need something exciting and different, that means something to me. I was thinking of ‘The Penguin Theory’, which you will recognise if you’ve read my earlier posts, I even have permission from the co-founder of the penguin theory. (I say co-founder, but she was the one who really first mentioned it). I would also have a mascot of a penguin called ‘Gru-gru’ named after one of my penguins from the origins of this theory.
When I told my mother all this she didn’t seem to think it was a good idea as it didn’t say what my items were, even mentioning that a lot high street shops don’t tend to either didn’t seem to sway her, I mean ‘Monsoon’ doesn’t shout clothing to me, just lots and lots of rain.
Anyone got any advice or ideas?
In other news, I’VE MOVED! (hence the long silence)
I no longer live in the north but am based down in Essex. I wanted to be closer to London and the Boyfriend needed help with rent so it just seemed like a good idea. Since i’ve got here I’ve sorted out our room about 3 times, applied for every job I could find, handed out as many CVs as possible and sketched more designs for when I bring all my crafty stuff down. (I’m actually going to get the rest of my stuff tomorrow).
I just got news today that I have got myself an interview in a Weatherspoons about 40minutes away (my car is ridiculously economical so petrol shouldn’t be too expensive). It’s for a part time job which is perfect as then I still have plenty of time to sew and go to auditions!
Better start picking out a smart outfit and practice answering questions!
Till next time, stay happy!
