I have a lot to catch up on, such as a recent trip to cornwall to shoot a skating event. I’m still editing all my photographs and will be doing a big blog post on it soon! But first an update on my photography!
Today I received the first of my prints in the post! I just ordered some small ones as a test purchase but they all came out great! Very happy with the quality and speed of delivery from DS colour labs and can’t wait to get ordering more!
There are also two more items not included in these photographs as they are part of a top secret project I am working on and should be completed in the next month or so!
I have actually put one of my photographs up for sale on Etsy already! This print was taken in Grosmont which is in the county of Monmouthshire in Wales.
I loved this photograph as soon as I took it, I find the rolling hill very relaxing and love that I can see walkers trekking up the sides and standing at the top.
It is available in my etsy shop here and can come as just the print or mounted on card or foam board.
I can’t wait to get more of my photo’s printed and up for sale! I have some prints which I am really excited about showing off!
I have recently been thinking a lot about my old love of photography. I have a big, old DSLR and I’m always taking far too many photographs, but yet I do nothing with them.
So I’ve decided now is time to get back into photography, start seriously editing again and maybe even adding a few to my shop. Of course I will still be sewing (although i am finding it hard to stay motivated with it right now) but I also want to start selling prints.
If anyone knows of anywhere I could get prints done cheaply and easily that would be amazing (for the uk), I have a few places in mind but any help from photographers out there would be greatly appreciated.
I absolutely love messing around on photoshop with an image, it is definitely one of my favourite things to do, and so last night I decided to experiment with a few images I took of Ash longboarding. You can click on the images to see them a bit bigger.
I started off with a more simple edit, just adding texture, adjusting the colours slightly and playing with the levels.
I like how I made this feel slightly grungy but with Ash really popping out of the centre with his bright colours. I’m glad I managed to catch him as his arms made such a nice line and his board had started to slide. I also really love the concentrated look on his face with his tongue sticking out (although he hates it), it really makes me chuckle. 🙂
The next photograph I decided to be a little more adventurous and play with the background by taking out all the colour. I wanted to really make him stand out as the background is quite busy with all the leaves. I also cropped it slightly to create a better line and draw your eye to him even more.
Again I’m really happy with how this one turned out, I think the contrast between the background and Ash works really well. The only thing is I still find the background very busy and so I think I might need to play around with it even more, maybe by adjusting the contrast or blurring it slightly. But Ash really likes this one too and has set it too his facebook cover photo. 🙂
The last one I edited I decided to do something a little crazier and this is probably one of my most elaborate photoshops to date! I decided to add this bright orange texture to make ash look as though he was on fire in a way. I wanted to create a really dramatic image that would convey the power and energy used to do the slides Ash was trying.
Again I do really like the image even though its a lot different to my usual photography. I think the meaning I’m trying to convey really does come out and it is definitely not subtle. I still can’t decide if maybe it’s a little too much though and I think the lighter section in the middle could be more focussed on Ash.
What do you think about my photographs and edits? I would love to hear some constructive criticism!
I was 3 hours away from my home, my legs we’re aching after running up a steep hill and I was all dolled up in a pretty party dress and heels frantically trying to get in touch with a friend.
It all started weeks ago when my friend, and artist, mentioned an evening event at a gallery her art was being shown at. In passing Ash suggested that we surprise her and turn up to the gallery without her knowing. I looked at my Rota and I finished work early enough on the day to be able to get there just in time, plus I had the day after completely off!
So then it was a waiting game. I couldn’t wait to see the look on her face when we just randomly turned up, and I very nearly told her of our plans several times. I was just too excited!
On the day I finished work at 4, then I had to run some errands, post some packages, pack my bags. By the time we left it was 5:30 and we we’re definitely now in a rush. The drive was surprisingly easy, just the A1 for most of the way. We got there and it had seemed like the event had been cancelled, katy wasn’t replying to texts as she was other wise occupied so we decided to walk to the gallery anyway.
As expected it was closed, eventually I rang Katy and asked if she minded two people imposing themselves on her. She was very shocked but luckily seemed delighted that I had travelled to see her.
The next day myself and Ash left Katy to go to and open up the gallery before joining her later in the day after a bit of breakfast and sightseeing.
Her gallery really looks amazing. I knew her paintings we’re gorgeous, but they look even better in person than in the photographs! The colours she uses range from natural earthy tones to bright dazzling rainbows. Every painting uses colour to great effect, really catching the eye. The subjects are superbly drawn in a messy but elegant way, really giving life and movement to the pieces. I know I may be biased, but I really do love her Art and I believe it speaks for itself.
Whilst I was there I decided to do a little interview with her:
CR : What did you want to be when you were younger?
KD : Well originally I wanted to be a horse, then a tooth fairy, and then an olympic gymnast, but I’ve always wanted to be an artist. Always, always.
CR : That is adorable! So what was it about Art that interested you?
KD : Well, I would say its whatever is suggested in art, the small things like a glance, or a certain positioning, or the way that not everything is recorded in a painting but it is suggested and you can fill in the blanks yourself in any way you want.
CR: What inspires you?
KD : Sometimes, before I am inspired by the subject, I am more inspired by the want to paint something of a particular nature (powerful, strong or soft and calm) and then the decision the work on a particular subject and the research behind that is then the inspiration to actively get up and do the painting. I’m also inspired by artists like Odilon Redon who can work in dreamy and ethereal ways, thats why my work isnt always an accurate depiction of a scene, I like to add a dreamy quality to it.
CR : When you’re not painting, what do you like to do?
KD : Painting is quite a solitary process so I like to be around friends a lot. I like to go out for walks when it’s sunny, walking a dog, going out for food and drinks or getting inspired by other artists.
CR : What have you found to be the most challenging with your art?
KD : The process, the development and the actual physical act of the work seems to be very fluid and not exactly easy, but without its challenges. On the other hand, the part i struggle with is the side that I cant control as much, such as the material i am working on, if it takes a knock it effects the final piece. I am learning to see what materials work best to keep the longevity of my work to a high standard, i dont want that to compromise the work that is on it
CR: What can we expect to see from you in the future?
KD : Oh gosh! Well I have lots of ideas for collections, some conflicting ideas but all seem to relate back to my own style. As I experiment with other materials to work on I might see a shift in technique and therefore, maybe, some new styles. But for now I am still figuring that out, I will have to see what happens in the future and how my work translates into prints and merchandise.
You can see Katy’s Elegant Mess Exhibition at the Sam Scorer Gallery in Lincoln until the 14th of April. Or if you don’t live close enough you can follow her wordpress here, find her facebook page here and her official site here!
Well i’ve been working non stop this week. As I said before, lots of staff have left and so I’ve been given loads of hours. 42 to be exact. Not that I will get paid much for it.
I do really love my job and the people there and being able to interact with customers but i’m finding it harder and harder to want to stay. Reason’s just keep popping up telling me to leave, lack of money being one of them. I’ve decided to have a word with my boss first but I am already scouting around to see what else is out there. I heard admin jobs pay quite well.
But anyway, I finally got round to doing some more crafty related things. I’ve applied for some more craft fairs, updated all my social media (this blog included) and made a new treasury! I’m sure i might have said that the next treasury I posted about would be a Halloween one but I’ve decided to get involved with Craft Britannia’s shop of the week finally, after months of just following silently. So here’s a nice little treasury based on Colour Me Fun’s amazing Crayons! You should seriously check out the shop, it is adorable!
I found these crayons in the shop and immediately fell in love!
For one Lions are my favourite animals, two these are just plain adorable, although I doubt i’d ever dare use them! I think I actually might buy some for my cousin for christmas (along with some other items). Because these are named ‘Jungle Animal Crayons’ I decided to do a jungle themed treasury.
However as I search deeper into the jungle that is the Etsy search, I found that more and more Lions were popping up…Lions happen to be my favourite animal and always have been (closely followed by the penguin and red panda) and I found myself just wanting to pick all the lion items. So I ended up with a Lion themed treasury!
Isn’t this just the cutest neck warmer you’ve ever seen? I wish I was several years younger so that I could wear it. I might just buy it anyway! Who said i’m so old for this adorableness!
I love cute and quirky things, especially on my ears, and these are just amazing. These adorable studs are hand drawn and just make me want to ‘squee’.
Isn’t this just the cutest dress you’ve ever seen? This is the kind of thing I wanted when I was a child (and still do!), the kind of thing I will force any kids I have to wear whether they like it or not. Perfect for halloween, perfect for everyday, just perfect for a Lion Obsessed person like me. I wonder if it can come in a larger size…
This cute cushion is made from organic cotton and can come in a range of colours! I think it would be perfect for a childs room, it would definitely suit my childhood bedroom which was jungle themed before i decided I liked fishes.
I really love the print of of the lion on this cushion, it’s proud stance and fierce glare. Still not sure whether or not i’d prefer it without the hat but then I remember there’s pompoms and I chuckle.
Now this is an item I think I’m actually buying myself for definite. I’ve been looking for a phone case for ages and this one is not only available for the S3 but also the Iphone and the S2 (my phone). My boyfriend says it’s too expensive and that there’s loads of cheap cases out there but I just don’t think they could ever live up to a Lion wearing Aviators.
Don’t you just love the colours of this one! It’s just a big tower of colourful Roars and it looks awesome. I wish I still had the wallpaper from when I was little because I would totally buy this to match! Ok now i’m starting to miss my old wallpaper…
What’s better than a bunch of cute animals? A bunch of cute animals wearing party hats of course! These invitations are just adorable, maybe I need to organise an animal themed party to give myself an excuse to buy these…
Well this painting is just badass. I love the lion and the pop art style. It would be a great focal piece for any room.
Another picture but this one is a little cuter. I love typography and this reminds me of the part in The Lion King where Simba is learning to roar. Cute!
Speaking of The Lion King… It is and has always been my favourite film (although a few more have crept up to join it at the number one spot in recent years) and this poster shows the film off perfectly. I love the use of the sun as an eye, and the pose of the male lion. I just wish there was a Timone and Pumba! Still, if I was allowed things on my wall I think this would be up there.
This little set is so cute with those cute little booties, the animal bib and matching burp cloth. Just adorable!
If my hair wasn’t practically a mane already then I think this would already be in my wardrobe. But how cute is this? I don’t think I should ever be allowed it as I’d probably end up never taking it off.
I love reading and the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe is a classic! This shop has other similar brooches from other classic books too and is really worth checking out. I have my eye on the Metamorphosis one as I studied that play for my A Levels and absolutely loved it.
Another brooch but completely different to the last. This cute little fabric lion would look adorable pinned to a childs coat. They come it lots of different colours and patterns too.
That’s all the items I have for you for now. I hope you find them all as adorable as I do!
‘Till next time!
