Counting Bow Ties!

So i’ve been wanting to expand my menswear for ages and have finally done it with the arrival of Bow ties to my shop! There is only one up so far but i am planning on adding a lot more soon! (along with some other exciting products!)

This bow tie is pretty funky with it’s numerical pattern, perfect for any maths geek or just anyone who likes something a little fun and quirky!

I even pinned a fancy ball gown on Dot (my dress form is now called Dot due to her polka dot pattern) to match the bow tie, and I really really like it! (Just don’t look at the back)

I wasn’t sure if I liked it more without the waistband or not.

I really am in love with this and can’t wait to make more, you can find it on my Etsy HERE!

I am also working on improving my ties slightly. Not only that, but I am working on some even more exciting menswear! My waistcoat pattern has been improved and I’m even looking into full suits for both men and women.

It’s all hands on deck here at The Penguin Theory! 😀

Penguin Christmas Jumper

My sister decided to give my Christmas present early this year so that I could get full use of it before the weather starts to get warmer.

It seems to be that Festive jumpers are now a tradition as she also got me one last year! This year it’s got the most adorable penguin on it! Isn’t it just the best ever?

IMG_5811

I decided to wear it with this awesome wrap skirt. I just love how this skirt hangs and it goes with almost anything!

IMG_5835

It was a bit drizzly and so I took this amazing umbrella out with me. Isn’t it just fantastic?! It makes me feel very ladylike as well as being big and fun to look at! (and fun to play with!)

IMG_5814 IMG_5801

I also wore these awesome shoes which were only £10!!! I bought them for work as my old (cheaper) shoes disintegrated after a few shifts. I thought these would last a little longer as well as being adorable! I just love the fur trim around the top, and they’re super comfortable!

IMG_5800 IMG_5830

I am definitely loving my new jumper and have already worn it everyday since I received it!

Do you have an awesome festive jumper?

Infinity Scarf

Now available in my Etsy store is this lovely woollen and Burberry patterned infinity scarf.

IMG_5755

It’s a shame I wasn’t able to make this sooner as i will no longer be able to make and ship it in time for christmas, but i’m sure there will still be lots of cold necks around in January! (along with Etsy gift cards which I now accept thanks to my amazing sister)

This scarf is the perfect addition to any outfit as its colours and pattern make it very versatile.

IMG_5875

One side is a thick woollen material for comfort and warmth. The other side is a stylish, burberry-esq material to add a pop of colour and interest (as well as being nice and smooth against your skin).

IMG_5848

It is the perfect scarf to keep you cute and warm, but it also suits a more grown up attire. I also believe that it would look just as fantastic on men as it does on women!

IMG_5893 IMG_5890

So don’t let your neck get cold in this wintery weather! Wrap up warm with this cute and cosy infinity scarf!

May There Be Penguins!

I’ve been in bed for most of the day today with a horrible migraine, but it is the first of May so I can’t stay in bed all day!

As promised, today is the kick off of my month long event : May There Be Penguins!

Expect there to be lots of fun, competitions, freebies but also money raising, and conservation awareness.

Many Penguins around the world have declining numbers, Rockhoppers are one of the species in real trouble with rapidly declining numbers leaving experts baffled, although there are many factors thought to be playing a part such as; harmful algae, fishing, human encroachment, climate change and much more.

The numbers are truly frightening – northern rockhopper penguins are disappearing from Tristan da Cunha and Gough Island at the rate of 100 a day

Source : http://www.rspb.org.uk/supporting/campaigns/ukot/index.aspx

Over the last 10 years this represents a loss of 77,381 pairs or a rate of decline of 2.7% p.a. The recent 2010 census indicates that the population is showing signs of a recovery from the effects of the harmful algae bloom in 2002.

Source : http://www.falklandsconservation.com/wildlife/penguins/rockhopper

The problem is that studying birds in such remote places is expensive. Gadgets such as data loggers and satellite tags that can be used to track the penguins could go a long way to understanding why they are in decline, and hopefully help us to provide a solution.

I have chosen to raise money for the RSPB throughout the month of May, donating 20% of sales to their rockhopper penguin appeal.

What’s that you say? Don’t they just deal with the UK’s birds?

Actually they run very successful campaigns for our overseas territories as well, helping save penguins, albatrosses and many other birds, plants and animals outside of the UK. They even do work in Rainforests which even came as a surprise to me! They also sell bird food (which my mum buys regularly) gardening tools and much more for those who like to help from the comfort of their own home.

So why the RSPB?

The RSPB has always been a very prominent thing in my life. When we were younger both myself and my sister were members of the Wildlife Explorers and often went to events, meeting other kids and even some celebrities like Howie from The Really Wild Show and Dominic Wood! I have many memories of birdwatching at our local reserve with my sister and grandpa and was always excited to see a new species i’d never seen before.

They make sure that 90p of every £1 is used for conservation, in their words; ‘more money spent on saving nature and less on admin’. I like that, unlike some of the bigger charities, they do seem to concentrate more on the conservation rather than the advertising, but obviously they have to advertise to some extent.

I really believe that they are an excellent charity and go a long way to helping keep the worlds wildlife beautiful and rich.

I’ll be bringing out some brand new products and running lots of exciting competitions over the next month. I will have my first competition running before the end of this week (once i’ve recovered) so please check back soon!

You can also follow me on facebook and twitter for more updates.

Getting Ready for May

Sorry for my brief absence, I know i’ve been very quietly recently.

I just haven’t had time for blogging in between work, sewing and trying to enjoy the odd bit of sunshine.

I have some very big ideas for May and so have been a busy bee trying to get it all sorted out. There is a lot of sewing, printing and advertising to be done and i’m running out of time to do it all! I’m definitely behind schedule and the nice weather is not helping! (I just want to be outside!)

But don’t worry, I may have another barbecue planned for tomorrow (the third this week) but I will definitely be ready.

So expect lots of competitions, freebies, new products, and some awesome penguin related fun!

A Spring Time Walk

As the weather was rather nice today, Ash and I decided to go for a nice little stroll in a nearby park.

alpacajumper

I wore my Alpaca jumper my mother brought me back from Peru as it was still a little nippy and Alpaca wool is amazing at keeping in the heat!

I also wore a pretty little headscarf I bought from either Egypt or Jordan (I can’t remember which) around my neck and some cute animal print converse, although in hindsight maybe I should have worn wellies!

20130401_165603

20130401_165515

We took lots of pictures of the new buds that were struggling their way out of the earth and the blossoms on the trees.

Ash took this last one, I told him to stop being so good. You should follow him on Instagram as his photo’s are far superior to mine. Just search ‘Ashloids’.

Once we got home we decided it was the perfect day to have a summery lunch. I cooked us some asparagus with egg, toast, salad and a frankfurter. My egg was a double yolker which I probably got a little too excited over…

Hopefully the weather will keep getting warmer now so we can have even more pretty walks!

‘Till next time!

And the Winner is…

or Peng-winner as I’ve decided to call it 😉

Thank you to everyone who entered this competition! I had so much fun running it and seeing all the great names you were coming up with!

And don’t forget to stay tuned for more exciting giveaways, competitions and, of course, some awesome handmade items!

May There be Penguins!

Pick A Penguin – Competition!

After months of promising a competition finally I have gotten round to it.

Namepenguincomp2

Up for grabs is this cute, summery tote bag, a great addition to any summer wardrobe! Perfect for adults and children alike. 🙂 Even The Penguin Theory’s Penguin wants it!

IMG_1032

The Competition:

Myself and The Penguin Theory Mascot realised that he doesn’t have a name, this upset us both greatly. We racked our brains for a suitable name but just couldn’t decide on one so we want YOU to help!

So how can you help? It’s SIMPLE!

Just comment on this blog and/or this image on facebook with the name you think would be perfect for him and that’s it, done!

IMG_1076

Of course don’t forget to follow and like so you know if you’ve won or not! 😉

Each person can enter twice (once on facebook and once on here) and I will put all the names into a hat (or most likely a bag) to be drawn in a weeks time.

Good luck!

I’ve been a little busy…

Sorry for my terrible blogging, this last week has been a little hectic to say the least.

We all love a little Risk

We all love a little Risk

Last weekend we visited some of Ash’s friends and had a nerdy weekend away in the midlands.

We ate chinese take away and played Lord of the Rings Risk into the early hours of the morning and generally had lots of fun.

Yellows defending their territory.

Yellows defending their territory.

We have also been rearranging our flat as we’ve just bought a new desk for the grand price of 99p! We decided there wasn’t enough room for the both of us on one desk and that, even though it would be a squeeze, we could just about fit another desk in. Ash found a desk on ebay which is very similar to the desk we already have, just without the bookcase attached to the end. He bid on it and ended up being the only bidder! Lucky us!

So much room!

So much room!

We picked it up yesterday and tried to figure out how to fit it in. We’ve finally settled on moving our desks in front of the window and next to our bed. This makes that side of the room very cramped, but the side with a tv is now lovely and spacious, perfect for playing my kinect! 😀

We haven’t quite finished setting everything up (we have far too much stuff accumulated for such a small flat! It’s ridiculous), but when we have it’s should be small but far easier for us both to get on with our own things. Finally I’ll have lots of room to sew!

I moustache you a question.

I moustache you a question.

I’ve also been on a few nights out, one with work, another with my sister with lots of movember madness and a quiet drunken pub night with Ash. All we’re very fun and left me feeling a little worse for ware the next day.

Work drinks are always fun.

Work drinks are always fun.

I do have lots of fun posts planned for future, including a make-up tutorial, some tips for your CV and many more helpful things! I just need to get round to writing them…

Until next time!

Penguin Wardrobe

Even though Lions have always been my favourite animal my wardrobe seems to be being overtaken by penguins!!

Two of my favourite pyjamas decided to rip and so I knew I needed new ones. In all fairness they were both very old so they have done me well, but i’m still sad to have to chuck them out.

So off we toddled to good ol’ Primarnie in search of some cheap pyjamas. I found a cute plaid short and top set with an adorable little bow and then the most amazing penguin pyjama bottoms ever.

Ok so that may be a bit over dramatic, but they really are awesome. I was debating for a while as just the bottoms cost the same price as the whole set of shorts and top i’d already picked up, but I decided that  I still had tops from my ripped pyjamas which would match nicely.

These pyjamas are so cosy it’s ridiculous. I think I’m going to end up living in them!

I have also been wearing my Penguin hat a lot recently. It’s just too adorable and goes well with my new winter tights (also primarnie)!

This was me on the tube on the way to a juggling group in Camden. Ash said he went years ago (he’s pretty good at juggling to my untrained eye ) and he’s always wanted to go again. Now that we live so close there’s no reason not to go!

Unfortunately I didn’t take any pictures whilst there (I was too busy having fun!) but here’s an old video of Ash juggling!

It was actually a really fun evening, lots of people with various manipulative arts to show off. I really want to try working with Poi as they look so pretty!

By the end of the evening even I could very nearly juggle 3 balls! Just a little more practice I might be able to do more than 4 throws. 🙂

Anyone else who is interested in manipulative arts should definitely come along!

‘Till next time!

Halloween Shenanigans

Sorry I haven’t updated in so long. I’ve been rubbish lately because my work hours are just ridiculous and not giving me any time for anything else. Luckily though we have just hired loads more staff and so my hours should be going back down to normal! However this does mean I really will have to leave for a better paid job soon.

However, I did have the day off on Halloween and wasn’t in until the afternoon the next day and so decided to go visit Ash’s friends in Basildon.

I did want to make my own halloween outfit but unfortunately only got halfway through before running out of time. Again I blame work. Instead I borrowed a friends outfit and went as a witch.

a bank robber, a raindeer, a doll and a witch.

We started the night by playing a bit of Harry Potter Scene It. Ash thought he’d be rubbish as he hasn’t really watched it as much as the rest of us, but we found that a lot of the questions we’re quite easy, or at least that there was a nice mix, and so everyone seemed to have an equal chance of winning. The mix of challenges is really good too, from just normal questions and answers, to watching film clips, making names out of pictures and guessing who the distorted character was. I found that I was really good at the ‘hangman’-esq word games, where letters would appear  one at a time and we had to guess who or what it was spelling.

We then played just dance, a game that I love far too much. Ash is surprisingly wiggly in the hip area.

Afterwards we decided to go to Jumping Jacks as they had a 3 for 1 on drinks all night! Roll on the cheap Jaegerbombs! I didn’t really get drunk as I had to drive the next day but it was still a really good night with lots of dancing to a good mix of cheese and recent chart hits.

Halloween success! Now on to my favourite night of the year, Bonfire night!! 😀

‘Till next time!

1920’s Prohibition Era Ball

My boyfriend has finally started University! Unfortunately his loan hasn’t come through yet, but hopefully it wont be long.

His Freshers Ball was in the Theme of the Prohibition Era. Luckily I had the night of work because I was so excited to dress up in tassels and big feathery head pieces!

Unfortunately I ended up working a lot before going (4 people have just left my work including one of the managers meaning we’re pretty low on staff) so I didn’t have time to buy the amazing outfit I had envisioned.

Instead we had a quick run to Camden on the day to of the ball as we figured it would be the best place to find some vintage looking outfits. I did see some lovely and perfect outfits but unfortunately my budget would not allow for them. I also saw some cheaper outfits which again would have been perfect but I just couldn’t justify spending £20 on them when I knew I wouldn’t wear them again.

In the end I settled for a cheap cream lace number. It didn’t quite fit the style (it had too much shape to it really) but I figured I could make it more 1920’s with some accessories and make-up. I knew I had some shoes somewhere that we’re very 1920’s, but unfortunately I seem to have left them in the north so I settled with some matching lace heels.

I ended up tying a ribbon round my waist, not all that 1920’s but it looked pretty and gave me a big bow on the back (I love big bows!). I also wore a few long, beaded necklaces to try and make up for the lack of tassels. For the headpiece I used an old sparkly headband I wore when I danced the charleston with my old dance school (how appropriate!) and attached a big flower to it as I didn’t have any feathers.

For my make-up I made it quite simple just adding some eyeliner and then bright red lipstick. I wasn’t about to cut all my hair off into a 1920’s bob, so I just left it as it was, straight and long.

Considering my lack of time and money I think I actually looked pretty good!

It turned out to be a really good night. Just him and I dancing like idiots whilst getting a little merry.

It’s a shame the journey back wasn’t quite so fun. Our flat is really hard to get to with the night buses. This meant we had to take 2 buses and then walk for 40 minutes, which wouldn’t be too bad if it wasn’t freezing and absolutely pouring it down with rain.

Hopefully there’ll be many more good nights out soon, if I’m not working too much that is.

‘Till next time!!

A Year Together

Yesterday it was mine and Ashley’s year anniversary together. We decided to celebrate by going into london together and having a nice day out.

We started in McDonalds at Waterloo station as this was where we first met and had some nice healthy food(!) Obviously it was a very classy start to the day.

Then we thought we’d take a stroll on the south bank to see the performers, another thing we did on the first day we met. We found mr bean, some crazy bendy jamaicans and a man drumming on lots of buckets. I always enjoy seeing what’s going on there, the atmosphere always feels so alive.

We then wandered over to Camden Market, one of the first places we had a date. We wandered around the markets for a bit and I bought a lovely pocket watch where you can see all the inner workings. I’ve always wanted one but could never find one i liked until now! Ash bought a batman jumper and pulp fiction tshirt.

Found on the southbank

We then went to have a coffee in starbucks by the river before moving onto my little surprise for him. He’s a massive nerd so I thought I’d take him to Forbidden Planet, a big comic book and nerdy memorabilia shop. He was pretty excited! I ended up buying him ‘The One Ring’ from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy which he’s not taken off since. I’m surprised he made a decision so easily as there were so many items for him to choose from, and the book section could easily cause you to lose a few hours.

The one ring excitement

He then surprised me by taking me to a restaurant. But this wasn’t any old restaurant. This restaurant only sold puddings! Needless to say i was in heaven. In fact i was so overwhelmed that I panicked when the waitress came over and ordered probably the most boring thing on the menu.

A vanilla cake.

At least it was a very nice vanilla cake…The frosting was so light and sweet. Delicious!

I did buy myself an icecream on the way out though…

Looking tired after a long day.

However, he said he’d take me back again another time so I can order something a bit more exciting. 🙂

We then went home and decided to cuddle up and watch the first Lord of the Rings with some wine and malibu. All together a very chilled out and cosy night.

Definitely a successful anniversary.

Time to Frolick

Last wednesday i went out for our ‘staff party’ and managed to lose my phone (really i think it was stolen) in central london. But luckily i was due a free upgrade and so went phone shopping with Ashley last saturday (as i didn’t have a clue what to get).  Whoever stole my iphone has now given me a nice free Galaxy SII. I was meant to have paid for the handset but the shop had made a mistake on the pricing and so gave me the upgrade for free making me a very happy penguin.

Ash and Jack at the Chinese

It was also a friends birthday and Ashley had organised a little get together for him that same day so we also went shopping for a present. We got him a big flying disk as he likes things like that and then managed to get sidetracked and spent money on ourselves. Ashley bought a remote controlled helicopter and I bought a little ‘ecosystem’ complete with shrimp! I don’t have a good picture of my shrimp yet though, they move too much.

Playing with new Toys

Then we met up with the birthday boy and took him (and another friend) to an all you can eat chinese for vegetarians, him being both a vegetarian and enjoying chinese food. He seemed very happy with our choice of restaurant 🙂

They ended up staying over in our flat, playing video games till the early hours of the morning and getting drunk whilst i slept in the bed next to them hoping to get up at 8 for work the next morning.

Playing with Sticks

At work we had a ‘kids’ day and I was in charge of painting childrens faces. It was pretty fun.

Ash and Jack met me from work and then we went to Trent country park. They played with their new toys and some sticks whilst I went in search for the elusive deer.

I didn’t find any deer.

The Stresses of Moving

I promise I haven’t been neglecting my blog. We’ve finally moved house and currently have no Internet (this is being updated on the awkward iPhone app). Hopefully it should be installed on wednesday, although then it can take up to 11 days to activate our account. I can’t wait until its all sorted!

I’ve been working a lot in the mean time which has been fun. Still enjoying the job quite a lot, mainly because of the people there. They definitely make it a laugh, even when working till close.

When In the new flat I’ve just been sorting out all our things and trying to find a place for them in the small bedsit. Nearly all done now (probably due to the lack of Internet, although I hate to admit it).

At the moment Ashley is away on a business trip for the week. Despite not really seeing him much when he is at home and practically living in my flat by myself anyway, I’m already feeling a bit lonely. Probably just because I know he wont be coming home until Saturday. Hopefully the trip should prove useful to his progression though.

Will provide a real update with lots of pretty pictures of the flat once our Internet is sorted out, but until then I guess I’ll continue to rearrange until I’m happy with this place.

Pubbing it up

Last Sunday we met up with a couple of Ash’s friends and decided to go for a nice pub lunch as the weather was reasonably nice. We both ended up having burgers and afterwards were so full that we just made a few pancakes for our tea (or dinner for you non-northerners). He spent the rest of the evening playing xbox with his friend whilst I messed about on my laptop and eventually fell asleep.

On monday one our regulars came into work and decided to give us all easter eggs! He’s such a lovely old man and my egg has already been devoured despite it not being easter yet. Whoops!

Weatherspoons is also bringing out a brand new menu, so obviously the staff need to get acquainted with the new foods and we have to try them all. What a shame. Unfortunately i didn’t go to the meeting where we got to sample all the new things as i’d worked in the morning, but one of the managers did make me an ice cream sundae (which was delicious by the way). We sold our first ice cream sundae yesterday and the little girl I gave it too was so amazed when it came out exclaiming ‘WOW!’ very loudly. It was adorable!

Hopefully we should get the keys for our new flat tomorrow! (I haven’t heard anything to say otherwise as of yet) Very exciting times. I wont be sad to miss the (what’s supposed to be) 40 minute commute on the M25. I’m sure that has to be the worst motorway to commute on, everyone drives like a maniac, under taking, speeding, not indicating, and that’s not mentioning the roadworks that seem to randomly appear and disappear. No wonder there’s so many accidents.

Yesterday the 40minute journey took me 2hours.

At a standstill for around 20mins

Apparently there’d been a car fire on one of the slip roads but then there were several accidents along the way as well and I seemed to get caught behind them all. I’m sure that most of my time on that motorway is spent in first, just riding the clutch.

I think i’d find it too weird to have a trip on that road where i didn’t get held up in all honesty…

Till next time!!

Pyjama Parties and Market Stalls

This weekend I ended up staying over at my boyfriends bosses house. He was having a ‘pyjama’ party with lots of games and alcohol and invited us both. (Quite a big thing for Ashley  as not many people are usually invited over to his bosses house) The job seems to be going well for him at the moment and he’s improving a lot. He thinks he might have made nearly £300 last week (pretty big thing with it all being commission based), hopefully he can keep up this good streak and doesn’t get many cancellations. I have my fingers crossed that he can work his way up to management soon.

The night was really fun, I had lots of drunken girly chats and we played lots of fun games and became very tiddly. In the morning we woke up and all watched team america, a film that never fails to make me laugh. Then Ash and I wondered off to the delights of Brick lane for some lunch. We had some lovely curries and a nice little chat to the friendly people on the table next to us. Then we went to the nearby market hall, for ‘research’. They had some lovely stalls, but as I was there for research I didn’t allow myself to buy anything. I spotted some little earrings in a bargain bin that were just adorable! I really wanted them but just couldn’t justify buying them despite them being reduced and really not expensive at all. Luckily Ash noticed how much I wanted them and decided to buy them for me. I was so happy! Sure they didn’t cost much, but just the fact they were a present from him has made me really happy.

Cute little earrings.

The rest of the day was spent giggling, visiting his parents and giggling some more. We haven’t had a giggle like that in ages and it was really nice to finally spend some time together (without being stressed out or ill).

Oh and I of course sent some flowers over for my mother on Mothers day. A big bouquet for being amazing and always supporting my sister and I when ever we’ve needed it. She’s really been a rock in this last week and I hope she realises how much I appreciate her. She definitely appreciated the flowers and claimed to have teared up a bit when she received them.

Flowers for Mum

Until next time!
