Vandem Fashion

Although I was mainly at Vandem for the gnarly skating shots and to support Ash and our skating friends, the fashion loving side of myself also kept my eye on the clothing which was coming down the hill.  There were a lot of bright, fun shorts, vest tops, and colour matching; from the normal skater to the quirky and distinctive.

There were a lot of full leathers, obviously you want to keep yourself as safe as possible when travelling 40+mph on board, and quite often these were not only colour co-ordinated with their helmets but also their boards!

Some went for bright colours

Some a bit more toned down

There were a lot of brightly coloured shorts.

Muppet shorts and official T-shirt

Colour co-ordinated with his board – which, by the way, is the board I really want.

Ash even sported a few Penguin Theory tops along with his own bright shorts!

And of course no event is complete without a bit of fancy dress!

There to keep order, protect the innocent and shred hard.

There was even this beauty spotted partying the night away:

The jacket to rule all jackets?

But my favourite fashion find from the weekend was around the neck of a skater named Ryan Swanton.  Not only did he look pretty cool in his sporty shorts and vest top, but he was wearing a nice black beaded necklace to which he had attached an old rusty bearing.

Ryan has been skating for around 2-3 years but this was his first time at Vandem. I asked how he found his Vandem experience and he told me that ‘it took a while to ease in, but all today i’ve been getting faster’. He agreed with me that it was extremely well run and he would definitely be coming again next year!

I actually have some old ruined bearings in my drawer and so think I might make some jewellery out of them for myself.

Thanks for the inspiration Ryan!

Vandem Freeride 2013

A few weeks ago I went to an event in Exeter. It was a downhill longboarding event called Vandem Freeride. I didn’t actually take part in it as I don’t think I would be able to keep myself safe but was there taking pictures for a girls sports mag called Boardettes (you can find their facebook page here).  Ash, however, did take part along with some other members of our skating group.

Pre Skate warm up

The event was run over two days, thats two whole days of skating down a steep hill with no worry of cars.  Skater heaven.

There were hay bails on the sharp corners to stop people hurting themselves too badly and at the end to make sure they stopped before the road that hadn’t been closed off.  A bus would then take skaters from the bottom to the top of the hill again.

The start line

There were marshalls at all the corners making sure the skaters were aware of any unseen dangers by waving coloured flags and the skaters we’re scattered at the start line, a group going off after every horn that sounded.

The hill itself went on for longer than you would expect and catered for the experienced riders, bombing it as fast as they could, to the less experienced, who started slow whilst they gained the confidence.  It is quite possible to reach high speeds though, most skaters we’re hitting around 30-40mph but the top speed recorded was around 47mph!

Some crazy people even luged down the course!

There were several places you could sit and watch from the sides and there was a really nice atmosphere amongst the spectators. I was sat with another one of the skaters girlfriends and friend who is also called Clare. It was really nice to have some girly time for once and to have someone to sit with too!

Lots of sliding to slow down

Sitting at the bottom of the hill was great as everyone who came of the course had the biggest grin on their face and would immediately highfive each other and talk about the run before sprinting to the bus for another run.

Some added to the fun by dressing up!

Lots of skaters were colour co-ordinated

Later that night we retreated back to Skirmish Paintball Centre which was on the road that had been closed off and had been rented out so we could camp there. They serve hot food which was excellent, they had the usual greasy burgers and chips but then they also had pizza and chilli which were delicious!

That night there was a party complete with heavy metal, dubstep, table dancing, a massive bonfire and even cake! Skaters really do know how to party!

Yes, there was even a mosh pit.

We didn’t drink anything, due to lack of money and not wanting to be hung over, but we still had a great time watching everyones antics.  A lot of the skaters found it fun to jump over the big bonfire.  But don’t worry even when a few didn’t quite make it over, there was a surge forwards to drag out any failures. No injuries, maybe just a few singed eyebrows and bruised egos.

The fire jumping also made for some great shots!

Because what’s a party without cake?

The next day we noticed a huge improvement in all of our friends riding.  Milan (the other Clare’s boyfriend) and Ash were both managing to pick up more speed and getting lower to the ground.

Ash and Milan after coming down the hill. Ash said he felt like he was going to throw up when this was taken.

As you can tell, Ash was sporting some Penguin Theory clothing! I made him a t-shirt and printed on an old jumper as well as printing on one of my t-shirts. I’m hoping to make more soon for my shop. I have lots of different designs in mind!

We also had a friend who was meant to be skating Vandem but unfortunately broke his leg and ankle in several places a couple of weeks before. We decided we would write him a nice message in chalk and I managed to get a few good pictures of people sliding over it.

Get Well Stel!

The whole event was really well run. They made sure that crashes were kept to a minimum, there was great communication between marshalls, when there were bad crashes the marshalls were quick to react, the paintball centre was a great idea and everyone was having a lot of fun. Seriously great job by the team and we will definitely be going next year! Hopefully I will feel confident enough to skate it by then!

Dat Slide…

One of the tamer crashes…

All in all it was a great weekend with some great company. I will have more posts soon focussing on the fashion side of skating including an interview or two so stay tuned for that!

The Dos and Don’ts of Festivals – Fashion

Fashion is always a big thing at festivals, I’m never quite sure why as it usually gets very cold, wet and muddy (at least in the uk) and, with lack of showers, it is hard to keep yourself looking presentable. But if you really must make sure you look your best at all times, here a few tips for you to really get into the festival spirit fashionably.

Flowersunglasses

DO wear flowers in your hair. Festivals are notoriously ‘hippie’ themed and everyone loves a flower headband.

DON’T forget a big hat. Keep the sun out of your eyes whilst still looking stylish (or maybe a bit silly).

Toms

DO wear sensible shoes. Sandals, Vans, Toms or Converse at the dryer festivals, an awesome pair of wellies at the wetter ones. Also bring a pair of flip flops for those quick, late night toilet runs.

DON’T wear a floor length skirt. Even if the ground is dry, the portaloos get disgusting. Do you really want it dragging through god knows what on those floors? The answer is no.

hippiepants

DO bring some uber cool, hippie shorts. Not only are these really really comfy, but they look pretty awesome too. Perfect for relaxing at a festival.

DON’T be afraid to go ridiculous on your outfit choice. There’s always someone in fancy dress bringing a smile to everyones face, if you don’t mind the attention than why shouldn’t it be you?

DO wear lace. It’s always extremely popular, and that’s because it’s just plain pretty! Plus it’s a good way to keep cool at the hotter festivals.

wedges

DONT wear high shoes. Your feet will be in agony by the end of the day, and if it rains then you have no chance.  Even if you think they’d be fine, even the slightest heel will feel like torture by the end of the day.

DO plait your hair. You wont have anywhere to really shower and dry shampoo is only so good, plaits are a great way to keep your hair looking nice and tidy whilst still pretty.

badger

DON’T wear ridiculously short shorts. This picture was probably the most unpleasant i’ve seen, but no matter how skinny you are I really do not want to see your bum, or your frilly knickers. I don’t even understand how this is a fashion at the moment.

DO wear the merch you buy. I mean, why not? You probably spent a lot on that t-shirt or bagtanned, you may as well show your support.

tandots

DON’T wear body paint unless you don’t mind the suntan lines. I personally wouldn’t want pale dots up my legs for the next few weeks.

DO make sure you’re comfortable and happy in what ever you wear!

More festival Do’s and Don’ts coming up soon!

A Busy Weekend!

Sorry for the brief absence, between long hours at work and being sociable I seem to have neglected my blog. I promise I made the most of my free time whilst I wasn’t updating though.

Wrapped up warm, eating chocolate!

Last weekend I met my sister on the southbank and went to a chocolate festival! There were so many stalls selling all kinds of chocolates! Gifts, snacks, quirky little things, big delicious things, solid things, liquid things. You name it, they had it (in chocolate at least).

I bought an amazing Lion shaped chocolate I just don’t dare eat (i will have to take a photo for you all to see!) and we bought a bag of flavoured chocolate lollypops.

Giant Chocolate Nougats

Emma and I then decided to retreat to the warmth of a pub and chat over a bottle of very tasty wine. Ash and my sisters boyfriend then met up with us for some lunch. Ash and Sam were men and had steaks, I had some delicious scampi. It was really nice, and the first time the four of us have done something together. The boys talked gaming and we all had a nice chat about TV shows we watched, soon though we had to leave. My sister had a party to go to and we’d invited some friends to a RollerDisco, the very same place Ash and I went on our first meeting.

20130323_203021

The Rollerdisco was brilliant as usual although we left earlier than I wanted, probably for the best as I had work the next morning. Again we didn’t dress up and again I wished I had! There were some truly awesome outfits, lots of flares, bright colours, super heros. My favourites by far were the group dressed as retro games. My two absolute favourites being Twister and the Rubix Cube.

Twister

This girl had made a very pretty dress out of twister fabric. It was simple but it didn’t need anything else. She also wore a Twister board on her head, very creative although it looked a bit like she had just graduated!

Rubix Cube

This outfit was just so quirky and brilliant I couldn’t resist a sneaky shot! I wussed out at actually going up to the girl and getting a picture with her though, kinda wish I had now. She wore a Rubix Cube on her head and had a matching handbag. Her dress was a retro, colour block number and was pretty stylish as well is fitting in with her theme! I think I might have to steal this in future, i just loved it! She looked fab!

Halloween Shenanigans

Sorry I haven’t updated in so long. I’ve been rubbish lately because my work hours are just ridiculous and not giving me any time for anything else. Luckily though we have just hired loads more staff and so my hours should be going back down to normal! However this does mean I really will have to leave for a better paid job soon.

However, I did have the day off on Halloween and wasn’t in until the afternoon the next day and so decided to go visit Ash’s friends in Basildon.

I did want to make my own halloween outfit but unfortunately only got halfway through before running out of time. Again I blame work. Instead I borrowed a friends outfit and went as a witch.

a bank robber, a raindeer, a doll and a witch.

We started the night by playing a bit of Harry Potter Scene It. Ash thought he’d be rubbish as he hasn’t really watched it as much as the rest of us, but we found that a lot of the questions we’re quite easy, or at least that there was a nice mix, and so everyone seemed to have an equal chance of winning. The mix of challenges is really good too, from just normal questions and answers, to watching film clips, making names out of pictures and guessing who the distorted character was. I found that I was really good at the ‘hangman’-esq word games, where letters would appear  one at a time and we had to guess who or what it was spelling.

We then played just dance, a game that I love far too much. Ash is surprisingly wiggly in the hip area.

Afterwards we decided to go to Jumping Jacks as they had a 3 for 1 on drinks all night! Roll on the cheap Jaegerbombs! I didn’t really get drunk as I had to drive the next day but it was still a really good night with lots of dancing to a good mix of cheese and recent chart hits.

Halloween success! Now on to my favourite night of the year, Bonfire night!! 😀

Alphabet Dating – Starting with A

A few weeks ago my sister told me about one of her friends who had started Alphabet Dating with her boyfriend. This basically meant that they took it in turns to choose a date but it has to follow the alphabet. For example, ‘A’ could be a date to an Arcade, ‘B’ could be a Bike ride etc.

Ash and I have decided to do the same as we really liked the idea of it (ok so it was mainly me but he agreed it could be fun). I chose our ‘A’ Date and decided to take us to Anime Expo (also known as Comic Con) as I know Ash has been dying to go.

It’s basically a big convention for anime, games and TV shows. There were various talks throughout the day, signings, games consoles to play and un-discovered talent selling their wares.

Giant Tardis

It is also well known for Cosplay and, as expected, there was a lot of it! We saw storm troopers, loads of Naruto’s, millions of zombies, a princess leia (with a lightsaber and not a gun, much to Ash’s disgust), an awesome transformer, slenderman, Princess peach, some practically naked girls (even in this cold weather) and so many more! I love dressing up and so loved looking at all the weird and wonderful costumes. Some people really do go all out.

Being turned to the darkside

We mainly wondered around just looking at all the wonders the shop owners had to offer but there were also talks going on all day and games areas where you play both new and old consoles. Nintendo were there with the WiiU and gave us free keyrings! Unfortunately we couldn’t be bothered to wait actually play on the WiiU but it did look really fun!

I didn’t really buy much myself (I actually came back with money which was unexpected!), but I did get this cute little toadstool ring made with real moss, and this hilariously awesome poster of Godzilla by SilentReaper. I also bought my first Christmas present, i’ve officially started my Christmas shopping. Eek!

We did plan to meet up with my sisters boyfriend and his friends, and we did for a little bit, but we hadn’t seen parts that they had seen and so ended up losing them when wondering off to look at things. Maybe next time we can get there at the same time…

By Silent Reaper and now on my wall

All in all it’s a good day out if you’re into that kind of thing. I know my sister went last year and hated it. She said she was creeped out by all the cosplay and things. But for any avid gamers, manga readers and nerdy tv watchers it is definitely a good event to go to!

Date A success. I wonder what Ash has planned for date B…

Till next time!

Dress to Scare

So as the Halloween season is approaching some of you may be wanting to find awesome costumes to wear out, or even add a touch of the scary to your everyday clothing. Here’s some of my favourite little halloween accessories i’ve found on Etsy.

You can find the treasury here

Under Wraps Octopus Necklace

I’ve been a fan of this shop for a while. These octopus necklaces just look so awesome! If you want to dress up as an evil mermaid or maybe poseidon then this is obviously the perfect accessory for you.

Ceramic cat necklace

If a witch is your choice of outfit and you don’t own a black cat, why not wear this cute little necklace! This would be brilliant for halloween as well as a cute accessory all year round, especially if you’re a cat lover.

Bat Brooch

These brooches are just the cutest! The perfect halloween touch to any outfit. I think these would look awesome on a big winter coat, and would be a good accessory for any vampires this year.

Simon the black bat

Another bat but this time in necklace form. Again another perfect item for the vampires amongst you, or just an adorable necklace for those who like bats.

Pumpkin baby hat

This cute little newborn pumpkin hat is great for the families who like to get everyone involved as well as keeping the little ones nice and warm!

Halloween Gold Skull Shoe Clips

If you’re like me and have far too many shoes but want some special Halloween footwear then why not invest in some shoe clips! They wont take up as much room and can completely transform any shoes. These ones just shout ‘halloween’ with their cute skull designs and can come in 3 different colours!

Silk Skull Bowtie

If you’re a guy who likes to look smart but still wants to get into the halloween spirit then this bowtie would be perfect! I could see it being part of a skeleton/undertaker costume and it’s bound to impress at parties.

Bat Cuff Links

Another one for the well dressed man. These bat cufflinks are bound to add a touch of the scary to any suit. It’s the little details that make all the difference!

Black lace face mask

Isn’t this face mask just gorgeous?  I think this would look amazing when dressed as a gothic bride. I particularly love how you can see the eyes, but only just, which would give the outfit the perfect amount of halloween creepy-ness (or sexy-ness).

Shark Costume

Kids love to dress up and go trick or treating so we can’t forget about them! This adorable little shark costume would make any little terror truly terrifying! (or maybe just make you want to cuddle them more as they look so damn adorable!). Even better is that it’s actually a cape and so very versatile and easy to put on and off.

Halloween Brains

Obviously Zombies are ALWAYS a good choice for halloween and what do zombies love? Brains. I think this headband would look awesome whether you we’re out as a zombie or some kind of zombie victim. Just team it up with pale/green make up and lots of fake blood and you’re good to go!

Horned headdress

If you’re hosting an extravagant party and/or really want to push the boat out this year, why not use this amazing headdress. There’s so much work gone into it that it’s definitely worth the price tag (although it unfortunately doesn’t include the awesome wig as well). I can’t imagine there would be anyone not impressed by these terrifying horns.

Cat Hat with Ears

If you’ve been following this blog you already know my love of novelty hats. This hat is perfect for any cat lover or anyone who wants to become a cat for halloween. Not only is it amazingly cute but it also looks really warm!

Lion Halloween Costume

Ok, so this isn’t an accessory but you guys should know my love for Lions already. Doesn’t this little outfit just make you ‘squee’? It’s just too adorable for words.

Knitted Baby Dragon Feet

For my cousins last birthday we made the mistake of buying him some Dinosaur slippers and he spent the rest of the day roaring and stomping on EVERYTHING. I assume these cute little boots would have the same effect on small children too… Awesome for the child and for many laughs, not so good for any valuables left on the floor.

Steampunk lace collar

Again this is an item that would look amazing when dressed as a gothic bride or an evil witch. It would also look amazing paired with a plain dress for a night out. In fact I think I’m a little in love with this, it just looks so awesome!

Hopefully i’ve provided you with a little inspiration for this years halloween!

Now I just have to decide what I want to be!

I would love to see all your halloween costumes or halloween items!

‘Till next time!

1920’s Prohibition Era Ball

My boyfriend has finally started University! Unfortunately his loan hasn’t come through yet, but hopefully it wont be long.

His Freshers Ball was in the Theme of the Prohibition Era. Luckily I had the night of work because I was so excited to dress up in tassels and big feathery head pieces!

Unfortunately I ended up working a lot before going (4 people have just left my work including one of the managers meaning we’re pretty low on staff) so I didn’t have time to buy the amazing outfit I had envisioned.

Instead we had a quick run to Camden on the day to of the ball as we figured it would be the best place to find some vintage looking outfits. I did see some lovely and perfect outfits but unfortunately my budget would not allow for them. I also saw some cheaper outfits which again would have been perfect but I just couldn’t justify spending £20 on them when I knew I wouldn’t wear them again.

In the end I settled for a cheap cream lace number. It didn’t quite fit the style (it had too much shape to it really) but I figured I could make it more 1920’s with some accessories and make-up. I knew I had some shoes somewhere that we’re very 1920’s, but unfortunately I seem to have left them in the north so I settled with some matching lace heels.

I ended up tying a ribbon round my waist, not all that 1920’s but it looked pretty and gave me a big bow on the back (I love big bows!). I also wore a few long, beaded necklaces to try and make up for the lack of tassels. For the headpiece I used an old sparkly headband I wore when I danced the charleston with my old dance school (how appropriate!) and attached a big flower to it as I didn’t have any feathers.

For my make-up I made it quite simple just adding some eyeliner and then bright red lipstick. I wasn’t about to cut all my hair off into a 1920’s bob, so I just left it as it was, straight and long.

Considering my lack of time and money I think I actually looked pretty good!

It turned out to be a really good night. Just him and I dancing like idiots whilst getting a little merry.

It’s a shame the journey back wasn’t quite so fun. Our flat is really hard to get to with the night buses. This meant we had to take 2 buses and then walk for 40 minutes, which wouldn’t be too bad if it wasn’t freezing and absolutely pouring it down with rain.

Hopefully there’ll be many more good nights out soon, if I’m not working too much that is.

‘Till next time!!
